Rear Brake Disc Inspection
Runout
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it w i t h
safety stands in the proper locations (see page 1-7).
Remove the rear wheels.
2. Remove the brake pads (see page 19-21).
3. Inspect the brake disc surface f o r damage and
cracks. Clean the disc t h o r o u g h l y , and remove all
rust.
4. Install suitable flat washers (A) and wheel nuts, and
tighten the nuts to the specified torque to hold the
brake disc securely against the hub.
108 N-m
(11.0 kgf-m, 80 Ibf-ft)
5. Set up the dial gauge against the brake disc as
s h o w n , and measure the runout at 10 m m (0.4 in.)
f r o m the outer edge of the disc.
Brake disc runout:
Service limit: 0.15 m m (0.006 in.)
6. If the brake disc is beyond the brake disc runout
service limit, refinish the brake disc w i t h an on-car
brake lathe. The Kwik-Lathe produced by Kwik-way
Manufacturing Co. and the " F r o n t Brake Disc
L a t h e " offered by Snap-on Tools Co. are approved
for this operation.
Thickness and Parallelism
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it w i t h
safety stands in the proper locations (see page 1-7).
Remove the rear wheels.
2. Remove the brake pads (see page 19-21).
3. Using a micrometer, measure disc thickness at
eight points, about 45 ° apart and 10 m m (0.4 in.) in
f r o m the outer edge of the disc. Replace the brake
disc if the smallest m e a s u r e m e n t is less than the
max. refinishing limit.
Brake disc thickness:
Standard: 8.9—9.1 m m (0.35—0.36 in.)
Max. refinishing limit: 8.0 mm (0.31 in.)
Brake disc parallelism: 0.015 m m (0.0006 in.) max.
NOTE: This is the m a x i m u m allowable difference
between the thickness measurements.
4. If the brake disc is beyond the service limit for
parallelism, refinish the brake disc.
NOTE: If the brake disc is beyond the service limit
for refinishing, replace it (see step 6 on page 18-31).
Max. refinish limit:
8.0 m m (0.31 in.)
NOTE:
• If the brake disc is beyond the service limit for
refinishing, replace it (see step 6 on page 18-31).
• A n e w disc should be refinished if its runout is
greater than 0.10 m m (0.004 in.).
