Brake pedal sinks/fades when braking
1. Start the engine, and let it warm up to operating temperature.
2. Attach a 2-inch piece of masking tape along the bottom ofthe steering wheel, and draw a horizontal reference
marK across tI.
3. With the transmission in Neutral, press and hold the brake pedal lig htly (about the same pressu re needed to keep
an A,/T-equipped car from creeping), then release the parking brake.
W h i l e s t i l l h o l d i n g t h e b r a k e p e d a l , h o o k t h e e n d o f t h e t a p e m e a s u r e b e h i n d i t . T h e n p u l l t h e t a p e u p t o t h e
steering wheel, noting where the tape measure lines up with the reference mark you made on the masking tape.
Apply steady pressure to the brake pedal for 3 minutes.
Watch the tape measure.
. if it moves less than 10 mm, the master cvlinder is OK.
. if it moves more than 10 mm replace the master cylinder.

Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
. Reservoir or reservoir grommets
. L i n e j o i n t s
Between master cvlinder and booster
Bulging seal at reservoir cap, This is a
s i g n o f f l u i d c o n t a m i n a t i o n .
L o o k f o r d a m a g e o r s i g n s o f f l u i d l e a k a g e a t :
. Line joints and banjo bolt connections
. H o s e s a n d l i n e s , a l s o i n s p e c t f o r t w i s t i n g o r
Bulging, twisted, or bent lines.
Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
. Piston seal
. Banjo bolt connections
S e i z e d o r s t i c k i n g c a l i p e r p i n s .
Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
. Line joints
