DTC P0500: VSS Circuit Malfunction
1 . R e s e t t h e E C M ( s e e p a g e 1 1 - 4 )
2. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with
n o l o a d { i n n e u t r a l ) u n t i l t h e r a d i a t o r f a n c o m e s o n ,
then let it idle.
Test-drive with the transmission in 2nd gear
accelerate to 4,000 rpm, then decelerate to 1,500
rpm with the throttle fully closed for at least 5
seconds.
4. Check for a DTC with the scan tool.
ls DTC P0500 indicated?
YES Go to step 5.
NO Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time.
Check for poor connections or loose terminals
between the VSS and at the ECM.I
5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
6 . R a i s e t h e v e h i c l e .
7. Disconnect the VSS 3P connector.
8 . T u r n t h e i g n i t i o n s w i t c h O N ( l l ) .
9. lvleasure voltage between VSS 3P connector
t e r m i n a l N o . 1 a n d b o d y g r o u n d .
VSS 3P CONNECTOR
Wire side of female terminals
ls there about 5 V?
YES Go to step

10. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminal

ECM CONNECTOR C {31P}
Wire side oI temale terminals
ls there about 5 V?
YES Repair open in the wire between the ECM
( C 2 8 ) a n d V S S . I
NO Substitute a known-good ECM and recheck
(see page 11-5). lf the symptom/indication goes
a w a y , r e p l a c e t h e o r i g i n a l E C M . I
Measure voltage between the VSS 3P connector
t e r m i n a l s N o . 1 a n d N o . 3 .

YES Go to step 12.
NO Repair open in the wire between the Eclvl
