ELECTRIC STARTER
TROUBLESHOOTING
NOTE:
• The starter motor should operate when the transmission is in neutral or when the transmission is in
drive and the front brake lever is squeezed .
• Make sure the engine stop switch is turned "0" before startlrta the engine. The starter motor does
not operate with the engine stop switch turned OFF.
Starter motor does not turn
1. Fuse Inspection
Check for blown main fuse (30 Al or IGNfuse (10 Al.
Is the fuse blown}
YES - Replace the fuse.
NO - GO TO STEP 2.
2. Battery Inspection
Check that the battery is fully charged and in good condition.
Is the battery In good condition?
YES - GO TO STEP3.
NO - Charge the battery lpage 20-7}.
3. Starter Relav Switch Operation Inspection
Check the operation of the starter relay switch (page 22·12).
Does th8 starter relay switch click?
YES - GO TO STEP4.
NO - GO

4. Starter Motor Inspection
Turn the ignition switch OFF,
Apply battery voltage to the starter motor directly.
Does the starter motor tum?
YES _. Poorly connected starter motor cable.

5. Relay Coil Ground line Inspection
Turn the ignition switch OFF.
Check the ground line of the starter relay switch (page 22·13).
Is the ground line normal?
NO _.

• loose or poor contact of the related

• Open circuit in the wire harness.
YES -
GO TO STEP 6.
6. Relay Coil Power Input line Inspection
Check the power input line ofthe starter relay switch (page 22-13).
Is the power input line normal?
NO - . Faulty ignition switch (page 23-61.
• Faulty engine stop switch (page 23"7l.
• Faulty starter switch (page 23-7).
• loose or poor contact of the related connector terminal.
• Open circuit in the wire harness.
YES -
