CHARACTER INSERT

Form: Ins or Ctrl+V
CHARACTER INSERT switches between insert mode and overtype mode.
The mode is shown on the top line. For example:
INS:ON
In overtype mode, characters entered replace (overtype) existing text.
In insert mode, text is inserted before the cursor position. This is useful for
adding characters to the middle of a line.
There are two exceptions to the above rule: E and the TAB command.
In overtype mode, E simply moves the cursor to the beginning of the
next line and TAB moves to the next tab stop (or inserts spaces, if at the
end of a line). However, if the cursor is at the end of a line (i.e. a E
character), any characters typed will be inserted before the end of the line
rather than overtyping it.
In insert mode, E breaks the line at the cursor, while TAB inserts a Tab
character or sufficient spaces to move to the next tab stop (depending on
the use of the TAB option; see section 12.4).
Even in overtype mode, both keys will insert text if the cursor is at the end
of the file.
