If you do not specify a drive or pathname, the current drive and directory are
assumed. If you omit the extension, TXT will be assumed. If you do not
specify a filename, ED will assume the filename NONAME.TXT.
ED uses the free DOS memory for the file you are editing, so this dictates
the maximum size file you can edit. If a file is too large to edit, the following
message will be displayed:
Disk read incomplete- file too big
and you will only be able to edit the first part of the file. If you want to do
this, make sure that you save it with a different name, or you will lose the
remainder of the file.
If your edits increase the size of the file to the limit of available memory, you
will see the message:
Short of memory- save file NOW!
If you want to continue editing the file, either split it in two (by using the
BLOCK WRITE command), or delete some text before carrying on.
Editing takes place in memory, so it has no effect on the disk file until you
use the SAVE command. You can save the file with the same name, or use
a different name, drive or path.

12.4 ED options

You can alter various aspects of ED's behaviour by including options in the
ED command. These are as follows:
Option
Description
/IGNORE
When searching for text, ED will normally not match capital
and small letters. Use this option to ignore case during
searches, so that, for example, searching for the will match
the, The, THE, etc.
ED normally stores the E key as CR-LF character pair
/LF
(ASCII 0DH, 0AH). Use this option to store it as a CR
character (ASCII 0DH).
