Manually Overriding the Centrifuge Cover
and Door Latches
Use a small, flat-blade screwdriver or the Spectra system centrifuge door
tool to perform these steps.
If you cannot turn on the Spectra system because of a prolonged power
failure or system failure, open the centrifuge cover and door by
performing the following:

before 9-1-90
Serial No. lower than 1S00465

Serial No. 1S00465 or higher
For Spectra systems produced before September 1, 1990:
See the left illustration in Figure 11-1.

Find the small hole in each side of the Spectra system frame
approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) below the "COBE Spectra" logo.

Insert the screwdriver or door tool approximately 1.5 inches (3.8
cm) into one hole, then lift up the screwdriver or door tool handle.
You will hear a click. This releases the latch, allowing movement of
the cover.

While holding the tool handle up, move back that side of the cover.

Repeat on the other side to completely unlatch the cover. When the
cover is unlatched on both sides, you can lower the door.
For Spectra systems produced after September 1, 1990:
See the right illustration in Figure 11-1.

Find the two small holes below the system's front panel. You may
need to lean over to see the holes because the front panel extends
over them.

Insert the screwdriver or door tool into one hole until it stops, about
½ inch (1.3 cm). Push down on the screwdriver or door tool
handle. You will hear a click. This releases the latch, allowing the
cover to be moved.

While holding down the handle, move back that side of the cover.

Repeat on the other side to completely unlatch the cover.
When the cover is unlatched on both sides, you can lower the door.
The maintenance kit of each Spectra system produced after July 31,
1992 at S/N 1S01192 includes a centrifuge door tool. If your Spectra
system was manufactured after September 1, 1990 and before August 1,
1992, you may order a centrifuge door tool. To order a tool, U.S.
customers should call Gambro BCT Customer Service. Customers
outside the U.S. should contact their local Gambro BCT representative.
