Helpful Hints and Recovery Procedures

Performing Manual Rinseback

Use a flat-blade screwdriver to perform this procedure.
If you decide to manually return the blood to the donor/patient,
perform the following:
1
Turn off the Spectra system's power switch. Seal and remove the
collection bag(s).
2
Dual-Needle procedures: Close the white pinch clamp on the
access needle line, then disconnect the access needle.
– or –
Single-Needle procedures: Clamp the access line at the access
manifold.
Warning: To avoid accidental removal of additional blood
from the donor or patient, or accidental return of fluids to the
donor or patient, disconnect the access before starting
Rinseback mode. During Single-Needle procedures, close
the white pinch clamp between the "Y" manifold and the
access manifold.
3
Use the screwdriver to open the waste valve. This relieves the
pressure from the centrifuge.

For information about valve positions, see "The VALVE Key" on
page 5-14. In particular, see "Waste Divert Valve" on page 5-15,
"Collect/Replace Valve" on page 5-16, and "Plasma/RBC Valve" on
page 5-16.
5
Remove the tubing from the return line valve.
6
Completely open the access saline line roller clamp.
Warning: The Spectra system alarm system is inactive
during manual Rinseback. If you must perform a manual
Rinseback, watch for air in the return line when returning
blood to the donor or patient. If you see air, immediately
discontinue the Rinseback.
7
Turn the inlet pump counterclockwise until you see that the RBC
line does not contain RBCs. Rotate the inlet pump by turning the
knob on the top of the pump.
Use approximately 200 mL of saline from the container.
8
Close the RBC valve.
