Adverse Effects
Be aware of possible donor or patient reactions during apheresis
procedures. Some previously reported reactions to whole blood
donations or apheresis procedures are:
Anxiety
Headache
Light-headedness
Digit and/or facial paresthesia
Fever
Chills
Hematoma
Hyperventilation
Nausea and vomiting
Syncope (fainting)
Urticaria
Hypotension
Allergic reactions
Be prepared to take appropriate action should any of these symptoms
appear.
Reactions to transfused blood products can include fever, circulatory
overload, shock, and allergic reactions, as well as transmission of infectious
diseases, bacterial contamination, alloimmunization, and graft versus host

WBC disposable tubing set only: If using a sedimenting agent in a
granulocyte [polymorphonuclear (PMN)] removal procedure, all
personnel involved in performing the procedure should understand any
adverse affects, warnings, and cautions printed in the product insert
provided by the sedimenting agent manufacturer.
