The power steering system on the Electric Ranger is
composed of a steering gear and steering linkage
from the Ranger 4x4. Pressure for the power
steering is supplied by an electrically operated
pump. A steering wheel sensor is mounted on the
column to provide turning information to the power
steering pump. An electronic controller receives the
steering wheel sensor input and vehicle speed
information from the traction inverter module
(TIM). Based upon this information, the electronic
controller varies the pump output to meet current
vehicle needs.

The power steering pump can be heard when the
vehicle is turned on and the steering wheel is turned
while the vehicle is stationary. This will cause the
pump to operate at full output. Once the steering
wheel is released, the pump will return to normal.
At temperatures lower than -6.7°C (20°F), the pump
may take up to 30 seconds before it is able to
provide full assist.
