With XANTÉ's Command Center, you print a calibration strip to
determine the current status of the printer. This strip is measured
with your Colortron (or similar device) and that data is used to create
a custom transfer curve. This curve calibrates your printer to the
specific media and environmental conditions at the time. Custom
transfer curves can be saved to your hard disk and downloaded to the
controller when needed.
As with any precision instrument, general usage and environmental
conditions can change the quality of a printer's output. A custom
transfer curve may not be effective if the environment or printer
condition has changed. To ensure that transfer curves are still
accurate, calibrate your printer(s) regularly.

Preparing for Printer Calibration

Printer calibration is done after you load the printer drivers and
install PDFs. Always prime the printer(s) before calibrating to
make sure all ink heads are firing correctly (see the printer
documentation for instructions).
Calibrate the measuring device (see "Calibrate the Colortron II"
later in this chapter for instructions to calibrate the device that
ships with your controller. For other devices, see the user
documentation).
Always prime the printer(s) before beginning the calibration to
ensure that all ink heads are firing correctly (see your printer
documentation for details).

Sending a Transfer Curve to the Controller

Your controller ships with a factory default transfer curve resident in
ROM. The first time you calibrate your printer, you can use this
curve or download one of the curves provided by XANTÉ on your
utilities disks. These curves have been designed for use with
ENCAD QIS ink and media and can serve as the basis for your
printer calibration.
