Glossary
1-sided printing
Printing on one side of the page. Use one side of paper. See 2-
sided printing.
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange.
A digital
coding system used to represent characters or control functions
electronically, each character being represented by either seven
or eight bits. This coding system is used to control printers and
communication devices.
background spots
Spots caused by toner particles being randomly deposited in non
image areas.
baud rate
Rate at which the information is sent from the host computer to
the printer.
Baud rate is the data transfer rate between the
computer and the printer.
The computer and the printer must
be configured at the same baud rate.
The rate can be set from
between 1200 and 19,200 baud depending on the type of
computer used. The baud rate is set only if the serial interface is
used.
bit mapped
Display screen image generated by bit for each point, or dot, on
screen. Resolution is very high because any point on screen can
be addressed.
Scanner is directed by software to create
characters and/or graphics.
buffer
Compartment of memory in which data is stored during transfer
from one device to another.
Useful for (1) accumulating data
into blocks before storage or processing, and (2) for adjusting
differences of speed between devices, or between a device and
a communicating facility.
