FAST Terminal
The standard handheld computer used by the Z-Max Survey system is the FAST
Terminal (Figure 2.15). The FAST Terminal is a lightweight, rugged handheld
computer developed especially for surveying applications. It is designed to
withstand conditions encountered during a variety of field scenarios. The FAST
Terminal uses Bluetooth wireless technology so that no cables are required
between the handheld and the receiver. Users can interface with the receiver up
to 10 meters away.

The FAST Terminal features wireless communication via a Bluetooth-enabled
Compact Flash card, a monochrome 320x240 display, and an RS-232 port
located at the top of the unit. In addition, the unit comes with 64 MB RAM and 32
MB of ROM.
FAST Survey
Residing on the FAST Terminal data collector is the field application software
FAST Survey. As with a conventional total station, this software is the user's
interface to the base and rover systems, facilitating survey preparation and
execution. FAST Survey software was designed by Thales Navigation specifically
for use with Thales Navigation RTK systems. FAST Survey offers all the basic
requirements for configuration of the Z-Max for RTK surveys such as base setup,
rover setup, and control of communications devices. FAST Survey software also
