Communication Module into the rear of the GPS Receiver Module housing first as
shown in Figure 2.13. This will correctly align the module. Using the ledge like a
hinge, swing the module closed until the latch on the Communication Module clicks
into place.
UHF Communication Modules
The Communication Module may contain various types of UHF radio receivers. The
antenna for the radios is the UHF Antenna Module which is described in the next
section. Certain radio settings are configurable such as channel and data transfer rate
(or link rate). Configuring the radios is most commonly accomplished using field
application software running on the handheld computer. Communication Modules can
also be configured using the front panel display of the Z-Max. Instructions for
configuring Communications modules using field application software can be found in
the software user manuals. Instructions for configuring Communications modules
using the front panel display can be found in the Front Panel User Interface
discussion on page 43.
Thales Navigation U-Link
The only configurable parameters of the Thales Navigation U-Link radio are the
channel frequency and the baud rate. The data transfer speed (or link speed) is fixed
at 4800 bps.
Pacific Crest PDL
Configurable parameters of the PDL radio include the link speed, sensitivity and the
channel frequency index. For more information about advanced configuration of
Pacific Crest radios, please refer to the PDL user manuals.
The UHF radios in the Communication Module are receivers and do not transmit.
They are only used with the rover receiver. To transmit data while operating a real-
time system, the base Z-Max requires an external radio.
Cellular Communication Modules
The Z-Max uses cellular phone technology to transmit and receive data. Unlike the
UHF radios that require an external radio transmitter at the base station, the cellular
modem in the Communication Module will work as both the transmitter and the
receiver. Operating cellular devices requires you to set up cellular service with a
service provider. The service provider will vary by region and will supply the phone
number and other account information for the service.
