Getting Started
Getting the Z-Max Surveying System up and running is a straightforward procedure
that involves simply connecting the modules required for your particular type of
survey, turning the receiver on, and quickly checking the receiver status to ensure that
the receiver is tracking satellites and recording data.
This chapter will guide you through this process in a step by step procedure that starts
with opening the case and ends with checking some of the basic functionality to help
you become more comfortable with the receiver. This chapter will also provide a short
tutorial on using the front panel display. Prior to working with this chapter, it is strongly
recommended that you review Chapter 2 - Equipment Description to get an
overview of the different modules and their functionality. At the very least, you should
be able to identify each module and its purpose, be able to identify the power button
and know how it works, identify the front panel display control buttons, and be aware
of the functionality of the LEDs.
The purpose of this chapter is to help you become comfortable with the different
modules that comprise the Z-Max System and how to operate them. Therefore, this
chapter will focus on the basic system setup and will not cover surveying applications.
Once you are familiar with basic system operation you can find more information
about static and kinematic surveys in the "System Guide for Post-Process
Surveying" section of this manual and more information regarding RTK setup in the
"System Guide for RTK Surveying" section of this manual.
Follow these steps to setup your Z-Max Surveying System to tracking satellites and
recording GPS measurements:
Step 1: Charge up the Power Module
The Power Module contains battery cells that are used to provide power to
the receiver. Although the Power Module may be partly charged when you
receive it, it should be fully charged prior to use. To charge the Power Module,
connect the module to the charger as shown in Figure 3.1 and charge for a
