Survey Preparation and Execution
The previous chapters laid the groundwork for understanding the purpose and
connectivity of each Z-Max module with respect to the post-processed surveying
system. This understanding of the system will prove invaluable during survey
preparation and execution. This chapter will step through the process of preparing for
and executing a post-processed survey with the Z-Max System.
Previously, we discussed the static and kinematic methods of performing a post-
process GPS survey. Since the two methods require different procedures in
equipment setup and data collection, each is discussed separately below.
Before proceeding any further, let's review how your Z-Max System is packaged for
field work. Your Z-Max surveying system typically consists of at least two Z-Max
receiver systems, each of which will include a GPS Receiver Module, GPS Antenna
Module, Power Module and V-Module. Each Z-Max system resides in its own padded
soft case which has semi-rigid compartments for each module and additional storage
for miscellaneous items. The compartments in the soft-case are adjustable to
accommodate different collections of modules and peripheral hardware. All
components required to perform your post-processed survey can be housed in the
soft case with the exception of the tripod and the rover pole. The soft case is designed
to fit snugly into a hard shell case that is optional with the system. The hard shell case
is recommended for shipping equipment through package delivery companies or
checking as baggage on an airline. The hard-shell case can also protect the
equipment when the gear is being transported in conditions where rough impacts are
common, like the back of a truck.
The soft case (Figure 4.1 and Figure 4.2) not only contains the Z-Max system and all
its various modules but has compartments for optional items for post-processing
systems such as the handheld computer, cables, the Range Pole RF Adapter, the
Pole Extender, and the HI measurement device.
