In the rover RTK system, weight and runtime are competing requirements. Since the
rover is carried by the user, a heavy battery is undesirable. The Z-Max System offers
the flexibility of a run-time optimized (13+ hours) and a weight optimized (6+hours)
option.
Power Module
The Z-Max Power Module (Figure 2.10) is the internal battery for the Z-Max
system and is the primary source of power for the Z-Max RTK rover system. The
Power Module connects directly to the GPS Receiver Module without cables and
contains a long lasting smart lithium ion battery. There are two types of power
modules. One is optimized for runtime (13+ hours) and one is optimized for light-
weight mobile operations (6+ hours). Both the Max-Run and the Max-Lite Power
Modules are available as options with the Z-Max system. The Z-Max system,
including the Communication Module, will use the Power Module as its main
power source. An external power source must be provided for the power output
on the serial port to be enabled.
The Power Module includes a smart monitoring system that continually monitors
the battery life remaining. There are two ways to monitor battery life remaining;
via the LED indicators on the Power Module and using the Front Panel User
Interface. The LED indicators provide a quick indication of the percentage of
battery time remaining when the battery is not attached to the receiver. Each
green light represents about 25% of battery life. Four green lights indicate the
battery is fully charged (100%). One red light indicates that there is less than 25%
of battery life left. To activate the power indicator LEDs, push the button on the
back of the Power Module (the side that attaches to the GPS Receiver Module).
For a more precise report of the amount of battery time remaining, use the BAT
function in the SYSINFO menu of the Front Panel User Interface, or the field
application software.
