cable may also be integrated with a power supply cable. The exact cable and
connections will differ depending upon the radio and the power source used.
Base transmitters typically draw two to ten times the power of the Z-Max. Higher
power consumption can require the use of an external battery with 10 Amp hours or
more of capacity. Depending on the type of radio, the power for radios outputting 4
watts or less may be supplied through the serial port of the Z-Max. The Z-Max
requires a DC power source to be connected to the external power port in order to
power radio transmitters through the serial cable.
For radios that transmit at power levels higher than 4 watts, a Y-cable with 3
connectors must be used. Y-cable connectors consist of a receiver connector, a radio
connector, and a connector used to connect to a power supply. The receiver
connector of the data/power cable connects to one of the two serial ports on the rear
panel of the Z-Max GPS Receiver Module. The 2 receiver ports are serial A and serial
B (labeled 'SERIAL A' and 'SERIAL B'), and each port is a 7-pin Fischer connector.
Pacific Crest PDL UHF 2/35 Watt Transmitter
The RTK base configuration using a Pacific Crest 35 Watt base transmitter
requires a Y-cable. The receiver end of the PDL radio data/power cable can
connect to either serial port A or serial port B of the Z-Max but port B is
recommended.
At the radio end of the PDL data/power cable is a 5-pin Lemo connector. The
data/power connector on the radio is labeled DATA/PWR. This connection serves
as both the power connector and the data cable. Connect the radio to the receiver
by connecting the 5-pin end of the cable into the radio and the 7-pin end of the
cable to serial port B as shown in Figure 3.11. A large battery is needed to
transmit at 35 Watts and a robust power cable is needed to supply adequate
