Power Source
The power source provides the electrical power necessary to operate the receiver
and the data links.
Handheld Computer and Field Application Software
The handheld computer and the field application software provide a graphical
user interface with the receiver during survey configuration and execution. Their
job is to make RTK configuration and execution easier and more convenient. The
handheld primarily interfaces with the rover receiver, but may also be used to
configure the base receiver.
Office Software
Office software, while not technically part of the real-time surveying system, plays
an important role in preparing and finalizing a survey. Office software typically
includes GPS survey preparation functionality including mission planning, feature
code definition and stakeout point definition. After the fieldwork is completed, the
office software provides the ability to transfer data between devices, perform Q/A,
generate mapping products and generate printed reports.
Now that we have a general understanding of the components that comprise an RTK
surveying system, let's apply that information to the Z-Max.
While the Z-Max RTK system is comprised of several different modules, each module
accomplishes one of the functions described above. In addition, the nearly cable-free
design of the Z-Max makes connecting the hardware together for an RTK survey a
relatively simple task. Let's take a look at the same components that comprise a
generic RTK system and connect them to the specific modules of the Z-Max System.

GPS Receiver and Antenna

In the Z-Max System, the GPS receiver is part of the GPS Receiver Module. The GPS
antenna is in the GPS Antenna Module.
GPS Receiver Module
The GPS Receiver Module, Figure 2.1, contains the GPS receiver electronics, the
SD memory card, the Front Panel User Interface, Status LEDs, and the external
communication and power ports. In addition, the GPS Receiver Module serves as
the connection point for all the other modules including the Communication
Module, the Power Module, and the Antenna Modules (GPS and UHF).
