Impression paper maintenance

The impression drum creates pressure on the substrate against the ITM drum to allow
transfer, and to carry the sheet from the input tray to the exit tray. The sheet is held firmly
by the grippers throughout the one to seven press revolutions of the printing process. The
impression paper protects the drum from ink.

Replacing the impression paper

The impression paper is wrapped around the impression drum. The impression paper is
glued to the impression drum at its leading edge, and is free at its trailing edge. It
cushions the printed substrate at the printing nip. When a paper jam occurs, the
impression paper can get printed or damaged.
Release the Emergency Stop button and press the Inching button until the paper is
wrapped around the impression drum (one full revolution).

Photo imaging plate (PIP) maintenance

Images are written on the PIP and erased from it with each revolution. The PIP's capacity
changes with time. Periodically, the system automatically performs auto bias, which
checks the state of PIP changes to compensate for it. Because the system calculates
compensation as a function of the PIP's age, let the system know when you replace a PIP.
On the control panel, click the Consumables menu, and select PIP. Enter the information
in the PIP Replacement section.
The PIP must be replaced when the system is unable to write an image on the PIP and
erase it, or when there are scratches or physical defects on the PIP surface. To prolong
PIP longevity, handle it with care, keep it as clean as possible, avoid scratching it, and
above all, protect it from direct light. Direct light diminishes the PIPs capacity to receive
and erase an image.
See the full PIP replacement procedure in 'Replacing the PIP' on page 136 of this guide.
Use the 'Inch-safe-service method' on page 32 when removing an old PIP or mounting a
new one.
Keep the following in mind when you replace the PIP:

Calibrating the press colors

There are two tools available to calibrate the press colors:

Replace the PIP in dim light.
Keep the work area clean. Even the smallest dust particle affects print quality.
Keep the PIP foil stretched and parallel to the drum shoulders while mounting the PIP
on its drum.
Load several sheets of color adjust qualified substrate.
Let the system know the reasons for PIP replacement and the new PIP serial number.
