Procedure for Steering Cylinder Internal Leakage Test
Hydraulic System: Testing
1. Make sure hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature (54 to 66 ºC (130
to 150 ºF)).
2. Park machine on a level surface, lower cutting decks fully, disengage PTO,
engage parking brake and stop engine. Remove key from key switch.
3. Turn the steering wheel so the steering cylinder rod of the cylinder to be
tested is fully extended.
4. Thoroughly clean the area around the hydraulic hose at the rod end of the
steering cylinder to be tested.

5. Place a drain pan under the steering cylinder being tested. Remove hydraulic
hose from the fitting on the rod end of the steering cylinder to be tested.
Install a steel plug in the disconnected hose.
6. Remove all hydraulic oil from drain pan. Make sure that empty drain pan
remains under the open fitting of the steering cylinder.
7. With the engine off, turn the steering wheel in the same direction needed
to extend the cylinder. Observe the open fitting on the extended steering
cylinder as the steering wheel is turned. If oil comes out of the fitting while
turning the steering wheel, the steering cylinder has internal leakage and
must be repaired or replaced (see
Check drain pan for any evidence of oil that would indicate cylinder leakage.
8. After testing is completed, remove plug from the hydraulic hose. Connect
hose to the steering cylinder fitting.
9. Repeat steering cylinder internal leakage test for other steering cylinder if
necessary.
10. If a steering problem exists and the steering cylinders tested acceptably, the
steering control valve requires service (see
(For machines serial number below 40345000) (page
11. After testing is completed, check oil level in hydraulic reservoir and adjust if
needed.
