Pitman shaft preload, as follows (see Figure 39):
1.
Attach tool J 7754-01 and a 12-point socket on the
stub shaft splines.
2.
Center the steering gear by:
Counting the number of turns while turning
the stub shaft (31) counter-clockwise until
bottomed.
Turn the shaft back half the number of turns
counted above to centered position.
3.
Check the combined ball and bearing preload by
turning the torque wrench through the center of
travel and recording the highest reading.
4.
Tighten the adjusting screw on pitman shaft (5)
until the torque wrench reading is 0.7-1.1 N*m
(6-19 lb. in.) higher than the reading recorded in
step 3.
The total reading should not exceed
2.25 N*m (20 lb. in.) torque.
NOTICE:

5.
Tighten the nut (1) to 90 N*m (66 lb. ft.).
6.
Recheck the preload after tightening the nut (1).
