Tighten
• Bolts to specifications, in the follow ing
sequence:
A. Inner bolts: 150 N-m (110 lbs. ft.).
B. Outer bolts: 135 N-m (100 lbs. ft.).
C. R e tig h te n
sequence.
6. Numbers 1, 2, and 4 main bearing caps and bolts.
Tighten
• Bolts to specifications. Refer to step 5.
7. Number 3 (center) main bearing cap and bolts.
Tighten the bolts temporarily to 14 N-m (10 lbs. ft.).

Measure (Figure 64)
Crankshaft end play, as follows:
A. Tap the end of the crankshaft first rearward then
forward with a lead hammer. This will line up
the main bearing and crankshaft thrust sur­
faces.
B. Tighten the main bearing cap bolts to specifica­
tions. Refer to step 5.
C. With the crankshaft forced forward, measure at
the front end of the number 3 main bearing with
a feeler gage (figure 64). The proper clearance
is 0.10-0.25 mm.

Inspect
Crankshaft for binding. Try turning the crankshaft to
check for binding. If the crankshaft does not turn
freely, loosen the main bearing cap bolts, one pair
at a time, until the tight bearing is located. Burrs on
the bearing cap, foreign matter between the insert
and the block or the bearing cap, or a faulty insert
could cause a lack of clearance at the bearing.

Install or Connect (Figure 62)
1. Crankshaft sprocket (84 with mark facing the front.
2. Camshaft sprocket (89) with timing chain (85) with
mark on sprocket (89) facing the front.
Important
• Align the timing marks (figure 62).

3. Camshaft gear (88), washer (87) and bolts (86).
Tighten
Bolt (86) to 100 N-m (75 lbs. ft.).
