Install or Connect (Figures 30, 35, 36, and 37)
1. Install seal-retaining clamp (11) on neck of new
seal (13). Do not crimp.
2. Slide the seal (13) onto axle shaft and position
neck of seal in groove on axle shaft.
3. Crimp seal-retaining clamp (11) with J 35910 to
137 N.m (100 lbs. ft.) (figure 36).
4. Place approximately half of the grease provided
inside the seal (13) and pack CA/ joint with remain­
ing grease.

5. Pinch swage ring (9) by hand slightly to distort into
oval shape and slide onto large diameter of seal.
6. Push C
joint onto axle shaft until retaining ring
N
(14) is seated in groove (figure 35).
7. Slide large diameter of seal with large swage ring
in place over outside of C/V joint race (20) and
locate seal lip in housing groove.
Important
• Seal (13) must not be dimpled, stretched or out
of shape in any way. If seal is not shaped cor­
rectly, carefully insert a thin, flat, blunt tool (no
sharp edges) between large seal opening and
outer race (18) at a maximum clearance of oval
ring (9) to let air escape. Shape seal properly
by hand and remove tool.
8. Mount J 37652-1 swage clamp tool in vise and pro­
ceed as follows:
A. Position outboard end of axle assembly in tool.
B. Place top half of proper size tool on lower half
of tool and check for proper alignment (figure
37).
C. Insert bolts and tighten by hand until snug.
Important
• Make sure that seal (13), housing (18), and
swage ring (9) all remain in alignment (figure
37).
D. Continue to tighten each bolt 180 degrees at a
time, alternating until both sides are bottomed.
9. Remove axle assembly from tool.
OUTER JO IN T ASSEMBLY
Disassemble (Figures 30, 38, 39, and 40)
1. Remove outer joint seal. Refer to " Outer Joint
Seal."
2. Use a brass drift and hammer to gently tap on C/V
joint cage (19) until it is tilted enough to remove
first chrome alloy ball (17) (figure 38).
