COUNTERSHAFT
Important
• Do not disassemble the countershaft. Individual
components of the countershaft are not serviced. If
the countershaft is damaged or worn, it must be
replaced as a complete assembly.

EXTENSIO N HOUSING
BEARING REPLACEMENT (2WD MODELS)
Remove or Disconnect (Figures 1 and 2)
1. Extension oil seal (22 or 24). Refer to " Seal
Replacement" in this section.
2. Retaining ring (21).
3. Bearing (20) from extension (18 or 23).
Install or Connect (Figures 1 and 2)
Tool Required:
J 38807 Extension Housing Bearing Installer
1. Bearing (20) into extension (18 or 23) using
J 38807.
2. Retaining ring (21).
3. Extension oil seal (22 or 24). Refer to " Seal
Replacement."
SEAL REPLACEMENT (2WD MODELS)
Remove or Disconnect (Figures 1 and 2)
1. Extension oil seal (22 or 24).
• Pry the seal out with a small pry bar or equiva­
lent.
• Inspect the retainer (18 or 23) for damage.
Install or Connect (Figures 1, 2, 11, and 12)
Tool Required:
J 22834 Extension Housing Seal Installer
1. New seal (24), using J 22834 (figures 11 and 12).

Seal Replacement

Remove or Disconnect (Figures 3, 4, and 13)
1. Seal (115).
• Pry the seal out with a small pry bar or equiva­
lent.

Inspect
• Retainer nose for scoring, wear, or cracks, espe­
cially at the flange.
• Retainer for wear and damage.
Install or Connect (Figures 3, 4, and 13)
Tool Required:
J 38801 Main Drive G ear R etainer Seal
Installer
1. Seal (115) using J 38801.
• The lip of the seal goes toward the installing
tool (figure 13).
