6. Stop collar to the retainer ring (figure 19).
• Place the thrust collar onto the shaft with the
sm all flange tow ard the re ta in er ring and
squeeze the collars together.
7. Drive assembly collar to the shift lever fingers.
8. Armature shaft into the drive end bearing.
A. Apply sealing compound to the solenoid flange,
just under the solenoid.
B. Spread the brush assemblies using a tool sock­
et slightly larger in diameter than the commuta­
tor.

Assemble (Figures
• Wipe the armature shaft (9) clean and lubricate the
area that will be under the drive assembly. Use
Delco-Remy Lubricant No. 1960954 or equivalent.
• Wipe the drive assembly (32) clean.
1. Drive assembly onto the armature shaft.
2. Pinion stop collar (39) with the flat side of the collar
toward the drive pinion (figure 20).
3. New retaining ring (37) onto the armature shaft.
• Slide the ring down the shaft until it seats in the
shaft groove.
4. Thrust collar (17) onto the shaft with the small
flange toward the retaining ring.
• Using two sets of pliers, push the pinion stop
collar and thrust collar together to snap the stop
collar onto the retaining ring (figure 21).

C. Align the scribe marks or end frames and field
frame.
D. Slide the field frame over the armature. The
brush retaining tool socket will slide out as the
field frame bottoms.
9. Brake washer (34), end frame (41), identification
tag, and the two through-bolts.
10. Solenoid (3) and the solenoid return spring (5) to
the drive end housing (31).
11. Solenoid retaining screws with washers.
12. Field connector to the solenoid motor terminal.
Inspect SD-210
Drive end bushing. If no lubrication is visible,
lubricate it with P/N 1960954 grease. Avoid
excessive grease. If the bushing is damaged,
replace the drive end frame.

Inspect SD-260
• Drive end bearing. If no lubrication is visible,
replace the bearing using a suitable driver and
hammer. Do not lubricate the bearing.
5. New drive end bearing by pressing it in until it is
recessed 1.6 mm (0.06-inch) into the casing. It is
prelubricated, so do not add lubricant.
6. Shift lever (1) to the drive assembly by spreading
the arms slightly to snap it onto the buttons on the
drive collar.
7. Plunger (2) to the lever (1) by snapping into place.
Note which side of the lever is up (figure 11).
8. Arm ature shaft into the drive end bearing w hile
sliding the shift lever retainer (16) into the slot on
the drive end housing.
