• Attach a two-jaw puller to the clutch gear of the
third gear. Remove the synchronizer assembly
(91), synchronizer ring (90), and third speed
gear (87) together.

6. Retaining ring (85).
7. Thrust washer (84).
8. Retaining pin (70).
9. Second speed gear (82).
10. Bearing (83).
11. Retaining ring (72).
12. Synchronizer rings (73, 74, and 75).
13. Synchronizer (square cut) spring (76) from syn­
chronizer hub (80).
14. Retaining ring (72).
15. Synchronizer assembly (80).
• Do not let the synchronizer assembly come
apart during disassembly of transmission.
• Reinstall synchronizer (square cut) spring (76)
onto synchronizer hub (80).
16. Synchronizer rings (75 and 74).
17. Retaining ring (72).
18. Synchronizer ring (73).
19. Reverse gear (figure 10).
• Press the mainshaft through the reverse gear
(61), thrust washer (60), bearing (59), overdrive
gear (58), and rotor (57), if equipped (2WD
models only).
• Do not let mainshaft fall to the floor.

Inspect
1. Gears for cracks, chipped gear teeth, and other
damage that could cause gear noise.
2. Thrust washers for damage and wear.
3. Synchronizer sleeves for a sliding fit on the syn­
chronizer hubs.
• The hubs have to be a snug fit on the main­
shaft splines.
4. Synchronizer springs and keys for looseness and
damage.
5. All gear teeth for excess wear.
6. Bearings and bearing surfaces for nicks, burrs and
wear.
7. Lubricate all roller bearings with light engine oil and
check for rough rotation.
Assemble (Figures 3, 4, and 10)
1. Bearing (67) and first speed gear (68).
2. Mainshaft synchronizer reverse clutch gear (66).
3. Retaining ring (65).
4. Sleeve (62).
5. Spacer (64) and bearing (63).
6. Retaining pin (70).
