4. Seal (10) from tripot housing by separating (1) at
large diameter and sliding seal away from joint
along axle shaft.
5. Tripot housing (1) from spider (3) and shaft.
6. Spread spacer ring (8) with J 8059 and slide spac­
er ring and tripot spider (3) back on axle shaft as
shown in figure 42.
7. Shaft retaining ring (2) from groove on axle shaft
and slide spider assembly off of shaft (figure 41).
Inspect
1?
• Tripot balls (6) and needle rollers (7) for dam­
age and wear.
Important
• Handle the tripot spider assembly with care.
Tripot balls and needle rollers may separate
from spider trunnions.
8. Remove spacer ring (8) and seal (10) from axle
shaft.
9. Flush grease from tripot housing (1).
Inspect
• Joint seal
• Spider
• Housing
• Tripot balls
• Needle rollers
• All the above components for wear and replace
them if necessary.
Install or Connect (Figures 36, 42, 43, and 44)
1. Small seal-retaining clamp (11) on neck of seal
(10). Do not crimp.
2. Slide seal (10) onto shaft (12) and position neck of
seal in seal groove on axle shaft.
3. Crimp seal retaining clamp (11) with J 35910 to
137 N-m (100 lbs. ft.) as shown in figure 36.
4. Spacer ring (8) on axle shaft and beyond second
groove as shown.
5. Slide tripot spider assembly against spacer ring (8)
on shaft.
Important
• Be sure that counterbore face of tripot spider
(3) faces end of shaft.
6. Install shaft retaining ring (2) in groove of axle shaft
with J 8059.
7. Slide tripot spider (A) towards end of shaft and
reseat spacer ring (8) in groove on shaft (figure
42).
8. Place approximately half of grease provided in seal
(10) and use remainder to pack tripot housing (1).
9. Position larger clamp (9) on seal (10).
10. Slide tripot housing (1) over tripot spider assembly
on shaft (figure 43).
11. Slide large diameter of seal (10), with larger clamp
(9) in place, over outside of tripot housing (1) and
locate seal lip in housing groove.
12. Position the tripot assembly at the proper vehicle
dimension as shown in figure 44.
Important
• Seal (10) must not be dimpled, stretched or out
of shape in any way. If seal is not shaped cor­
rectly, carefully insert a thin, flat, blunt tool (no
sharp edges) between large seal opening and
housing (1) to let air escape. Shape seal prop­
erly by hand and remove tool.
Crimp seal retaining clamp (9) with J 35910 to 176

Important
• Make sure that seal (10), housing (1) and large
clamp (9) all remain in alignment while crimp­
ing.
14. Retaining clamp protector (if equipped) over larger
seal retaining clamp (9) and snap into position.
Important
Due to possible road hazards, a retaining clamp
protector (10) must be installed when inboard
seal or clamp is serviced.
