Clean
• Gasket surfaces on the block and cylinder head.
Install or Connect (Figure 49)
1. Head gasket.
• Do not use sealer on composition gaskets.
• Place the gasket over the block dowel pins with
the head up.
2. Cylinder head. Carefully guide the cylinder head
into place over the dowel pins and gasket.
NOTICE: Refer to "Notice" on page 6A4-1.
3. Cylinder head bolts. Coat threads of the cylinder
head bolts with sealing com pound (GM P/N
1052080 or equivalent) and install finger-tight.

Cylinder head bolts in three steps, using the
sequence shown in figure 49.
A. The first sequence to 34 N-m (24 lbs. ft.).
B. The second sequence to 61 N-m (45 lbs. ft.).

Important
• Replace all hydraulic lifters, change the engine oil
and filter, and add GM Engine Oil Supplement (GM
P/N 1052367 or equivalent) to the engine oil when
ever a new camshaft is installed.

NOTICE: For steps 2 and 5, refer to "Notice"

• Lubricate the hydraulic lifter bodies and feet with
Engine Oil Supplement (GM P/N 1052367 or equiv
alent).
1. Hydraulic lifters to the block.
2. Guide assembly.
• Previously made mark on retainer (20) should
be at front of engine.
Tighten
• Bolts (19) to 16 N-m (12 lbs. ft.).
3. Pushrods.
A. Seat the pushrods into the socket of the
hydraulic lifters.
B. Coat the mating surfaces of the rocker arms
(23) and balls (22) with Engine Oil Supplement
(GM P/N 1052367) or equivalent.
4. Rocker arms (23) with balls (22) on to the proper
stud.
5. Rocker arm nuts (21) on to the studs.
• Align the push rod into the rocker arm while
tightening rocker arm nut (
