Important
Any time the distributor is disassembled, the retainer
(49) must be replaced. Do not attempt to reuse the old
retainer.
Remove or Disconnect (Figures 2, 3, and 4)
1. Screws (25) and washers holding the cap to the
housing.
2. Cap (23) from the housing.
3. Rotor (10) from the shaft by lifting straight up.
4. Roll pin (27) from the shaft (26).
A. Mark the shaft and driven gear for reassembly.
B. Drive out the roll pin with a small punch (figure
4).
5. Driven gear (29), washer or spring, and tang wash­
er (33).
6. Shaft (26) with the pole piece and plate from the
housing (30).
• If the shaft can't be removed from the distribu­
tor housing due to varnish buildup, follow these
steps:
A. Secure the distributor housing in a vise with the
drive gear end DOWN and the pickup coil end
UP.
B. Using a spray-type varnish remover, clean the
drive gear end of the shaft. DO NOT allow var­
nish remover to travel up the driveshaft to the
grease pack in the top of the housing.

7. Retainer (49) from the housing (30) as follows:
CAUTION: Wear eye protection when cutting
and removing spring steel retainer clips as
described in this procedure. If your eyes are
not protected, flying metal pieces may cause
injury.
• Round Retainer:
A. Wear safety goggles.
B. Wedge a screw driver under the edge of the
retainer and use a " lift and twist" motion to pry
the edge up just far enough to get the metal
snips onto the edge.
C. Use scissors type snips to cut the retainer.
D. Use needle nose pliers to pull the retainer off
the center bushing. Discard the retainer.
• Square Retainer:
A. Wear safety goggles.
B. Use needle nose pliers to bend two corners
upward on the fluted end of the retainer.
C. Pull the retainer off the center bushing. Discard
the retainer.
8. Shield (50).
9. Pickup coil connector from the module (14).
• Lift the locking tab with a screwdriver.
