Parallel connection of multiple SINAMICS DCPs

General information
Several SINAMICS DCPs can be connected in parallel on the input side, the output side, or
on both sides simultaneously.
The system can be connected in one of two ways:
● Joint contactor/pre-charging input circuits
All SINAMICS DCPs are connected on each side to the voltage source via a single joint
main contactor. The same applies to the pre-charging input circuits. The main contactor
and the pre-charging input circuits must be designed for the sum of the rated currents of
the DCPs connected in parallel.
The main contactors and the pre-charging input circuits are controlled via one of the
participating SINAMICS DCPs.
However, each device must be protected with its own fuses.
● Separate contactor/pre-charging input circuits
Each SINAMICS DCP is connected to the voltage source via a separate main contactor.
Each SINAMICS DCP also has its own pre-charging input circuit. Each of the
participating SINAMICS DCPs independently controls its own main contactors and pre-
charging input circuits.
DCPs connected in parallel can be operated in one of two ways:
● Independent operation
Each SINAMICS DCP is supplied with its own current setpoint from a higher level control.
The devices run independently. There is no direct communication of the devices with
each other.
● Parallel connection operation
All SINAMICS DCPs are connected to one another via the parallel connection interface.
One device is the master. The master passes the current setpoint and the switch-on
command to all slaves.
This mode of operation is required when:
– voltage control is used
– higher-level technological functions are used
In this case, the voltage controller or the higher-level function runs on the master only and
passes the current setpoint to all current controllers.
