Reinstall oil strainer, spring, O-ring and torque cov-
er to 15 N•m (133 lbf•in).
Verify drain plug washer condition and replace it if
necessary.
Clean washer area on engine and drain plug then
reinstall plug and torque it to 40 N•m (30 lbf•ft).
Refill engine at the proper level with the recom-
mended oil.
NOTE: Engine oil quantity is written on the dip-
stick.
Start engine and let idle for a few minutes. Ensure
oil strainer and drain plug areas are not leaking.
Stop engine. Wait a while to allow oil to flow
down to crankcase then check oil level. Refill as
necessary.

ENGINE OIL PRESSURE

An engine oil pressure test can not be performed.
To verify if engine lubrication is adequate, proceed
as follows.
Remove valve cover. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD.
Start engine and run at idle speed to validate if
engine oil reaches rocker arms.
CAUTION: Do not race engine with valve cover
removed.
If oil properly flows, everything is correct. Other-
wise, verify strainer, oil pressure relief valve and

oil pump.

ENGINE OIL PRESSURE
RELIEF VALVE
The oil pressure relief valve opens when the oil
pressure exceeds a predefined amount. This al-
lows oil pressure to drop. Oil flows out of relief
valve by the side hole.

1. Bypass hole
NOTE: If oil pressure is low (as per ENGINE OIL
PRESSURE), check ball of oil pressure relief valve
for contamination.
Removal
Drain engine oil.
Remove magneto cover. Refer to MAGNETO
AND STARTER DRIVE.
Remove circlip then spring and ball.
WARNING
Spring is compressed and will go out with
some force.
Cleaning and Inspection
Clean oil pressure relief valve bore from contami-
nation with an air gun.
Inspect valve bore, ball and spring for damage.
Replace parts if important wear or damage are
present.
Installation
For installation, reverse the removal procedure.
Ensure to reinstall ball.
OIL PUMP
Removal
Remove magneto flywheel and starting clutch
gear. Refer to MAGNETO AND STARTER DRIVE.
