ENGINE LEAK TEST

SERVICE TOOLS
Description
camshaft locking tool............................................................ 529 036 055 ........................................... 30
leak down tester................................................................... 529 035 661 ........................................... 30

GENERAL

Before performing the engine leak test, verify the
following:
– clamp(s) tightness
– radiator and hoses.
Repair Tips
– Blue exhaust gas means damaged/worn piston
rings.
– Oily contamination on leak indicator hole (under
magneto cover) means a damaged oil seal on
water pump shaft.
– Coolant out of leak indicator hole means a dam-
aged rotary seal on water pump shaft (refer to
COOLING SYSTEM).

1. Leak indicator hole
– Coolant escaping from water pump cover
means damaged gasket(s) and/or loosened
screws (refer to COOLING SYSTEM).
NOTE: For all the checkpoints mentioned above
see the appropriate engine section to diagnose
and repair the engine.

Subsection 02 (ENGINE LEAK TEST)

PROCEDURES

Preparation
CAUTION: Perform leak down testing with the
engine cold. Introducing cold air into a hot en-
gine can warp or fracture valves and/or other
engine parts.
Disconnect battery. Refer to CHARGING SYS-
TEM.
Remove radiator cap located under front cover.
Unplug and remove spark plug cable.
Remove spark plug from cylinder head.
Remove CVT cover.
How to Position Piston at TDC
(compression)
NOTE: The engine must be set to precisely TDC
(compression); if this is not ensured the engine
will continue to rotate when pressure builds up.
– On right side of engine, remove the cylinder
head side cover.
