REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS
The cooling water for a closed cooling system must meet the following requirements:
1. 1. The cooling water must be completely clean and free of gas and air:
Insufficient de--aeration of the cooling water system can cause serious
damage to several engine components, such as cylinder block, cylinder liner
etc. (cavitation), in a short time. Continuous de--aeration is essential, and
disturbance of the water surface in the circulating tank should be avoided as
much as possible.
1. 2. Chloride content maximum 100 mg/l as Cl:
Too high a chloride content can cause serious corrosion throughout the
system.
Always avoid using raw cooling water in the fresh water system.
For emergency cooling, only fresh water may be used, e.g. in a separate cir-
cuit with a stand--by electrically driven fresh cooling water pump.
1. 3. Total hardness: maximum 12 dH (German standard):
The use of hard water can lead to deposits and fouling of the engine.
1. 4. The cooling water must be treated with a cooling water inhibitor (on an ni-
trite--borate basis):
Tap water is usually not suitable for use in diesel engines. Cooling water
treatment is absolutely necessary in order to protect the engine against
deposits, pollution, corrosion, cavitation and the growth of bacteria in the
cooling water system.
If oil, chalk deposits or corrosion are discovered in the cooling water system,
it must be thoroughly cleaned before starting with the cooling water
treatment!
When adding chemicals and when checking the quality of the fresh cooling
water the instructions of the supplier of the product must be closely followed.
1. 5. Anti--freezing agent:
At sub zero ambient temperatures an anti--freezing agent must be used as
advised by the supplier of the cooling water treatment.
