LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM
6A
INTRODUCTION
From the main lubricating oil manifold via lubrication oil pipes oil is supplied to the
crankshaft and the connecting rods, the main, big end and gudgeon pin bearings. The
main lubricating oil also effectets the cooling of the pistons through the main lubricating
oil manifold, as well as lubrication of the gears for the camshaft drive and pump
housing. The lubrication oil lines, also connected to this main lubricating oil manifold,
supply oil to the other engine parts, the most important being:
-- the bearings of the VTC turbocharger, if fitted ;
-- axial locating rings and the bearings for the camshaft ;
-- the intermediate gearwheel for the camshaft drive ;
-- the rollers and parts for the valve lever mechanism ;
-- the bearings of the valve levers, as well as valve stems and bridge pieces ;
-- the governor drive ;
-- the supply to the valve seat lubricators ;
-- the supply to the oil barrier of the fuel pumps.
A manually operated prelubrication pump is inserted in the circuit in order to be able
to fill the entire lubricating oil circuit and to prelubricate all engine parts before starting
the engine. The stand--by pump (if present) can take over this function.
The needle valves are fitted for use during maintenance and repair of the measuring
instruments between or after the valves.
In order to avoid overpressure in the crankcase the engine is fitted with an air vent,
connection of which must be completed during the installation of the engine. At its
lowest point it must have a means of draining.
