FITTING BIG END BEARING

FITTING BIG END BEARING
Before starting work, please consult:
-- chapter 2, "BACKGROUND INFORMATION" ;
-- chapter 3, "TECHNICAL DATA" .
1. Pay attention to the following points during the fitting procedure:
1. 1. The fitting procedure of big end bearings has to be completed for each
connecting rod separately in order to avoid displacement of the bearing
shells and oil leakage to the back surface of the bearings.
1. 2. Bearing shells can be placed back depending on the wear pattern, the
running hours and on the condition of the running surface.
Used bearing shells must be replaced in exactly the same position (see
marking on the bearing shells).
2. Thoroughly clean and dry the connecting rod foot with a lint free cotton cloth.
Only lubricate the running layers of the bearing shells sparingly with engine
oil! The back surface of the bearing shells must remain dry!
3. Fitting upper bearing shell:
3. 1. Fit the crank pin upper bearing shell in to the connecting rod foot. This shell
has no oil holes.
3. 2. Prevent the bearing shell from falling out by placing two holding plugs in two
diagonally opposite bolt holes, (item 8).
3. 3. Check if the bearing shell lug engages properly with the slot in the
connecting rod foot.
3. 4. Lubricate the crank pin sparingly with clean lubrication oil.
3. 5. Before turning the crankshaft in the connecting rod foot, make sure that the
bore and the faces of the connecting rod foot are clean, dry, and
undamaged.
3. 6. Turn the crank pin carefully under the connecting rod foot.
3. 7. Pull the holding plugs out of the connecting rod foot bolt holes.
3. 8. Check again that the bearing shell lug engages properly with the slot in the
connecting rod foot.
4. Fitting of the bearing cap:
4. 1. Fit the lower bearing shell in to the connecting rod cap. This shell is
identifiable by the longitudinal oil groove with lubrication oil holes.
4. 2. Check if the bearing shell positioning lug engages properly with the slot in the
connecting rod cap.
4. 3. Lubricate the bearing shell running surface sparingly with clean lubrication
oil. The back surface MUST remain dry!!
Fit the connecting rod bearing cap. Beware of the weight of the cap.
4. 4. Make sure that the serial numbers on the connecting rod foot and the
connecting rod cap correspond and are located above one another.
