GENERAL
GENERAL
Commissioning should be carried out under the supervision of a Stork--Wärtsilä Diesel
Service Engineer.
Check before operating the engine for the first time:
-- fuel requirements (section 5B) ;
-- lubricating oil requirements (section 6B) ;
-- cooling water requirements (section 7B) ;
-- inlet air requirements (section 8B) ;
-- alarm and safety system (chapter 10).
Engine operation and maintenance affects the reliability, fuel consumption and
satisfactory performance of the engine installation.
Careful attention to operating conditions and maintenance results in lower overall
running costs.
The intervals of inspection and maintenance of the engine, is described in chapter 4
of the manual.
In order to keep the engine in a reliable condition it is important to carry out the
maintenance procedures described in section 4B.
For evaluating engine parts consult the no--go dimensions.
Warning !
Any change in dimensions and/or materials in any of the engine driven components
such as alternator, tail shaft and auxiliary equipment at the driving end can change the
critical speed areas and can therefore be dangerous!
Do not replace or modify engine driven components and/or change the ratio of power
to speed without consultation with Stork--Wärtsilä Diesel service department.
See section 9B of the manual.
In a diesel engine, the crankshaft and its associated dynamic masses form an elastic
system. The vibration of these masses around the centre line of the shafts in the
system is called torsional vibration. By the use of a vibration damper these vibrations
can usually be kept to an acceptable level. It is not always possible however, to damp
vibrations sufficiently in certain critical speed ranges.
If critical speed areas are present they are shown in red on the tachometer and must
be passed quickly.
Under no circumstances an engine should run continuously in a
restricted speed area.
