INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
The starting and stopping system consists of various components among which a
compressor and an air bottle. The compressed air is only used for the following engine
procedures:
-- starting the engine;
-- controlling the electric/pneumatic stopping device ;
-- controlling the pneumatic oil pump (3.1) for the valve seat lubricator ;
-- controlling the order--dependent measuring and regulating equipment.
Paragraph 9B is a description of the starting and stopping procedure. Depending on
the installation it is possible to implement one or more actions.
This section gives a general description of engine parts. The most important engine
parts are presented in the schematic diagram, section 9D. The numbers between
brackets correspond to the numbers in the schematic diagram.
The compressed air is only used for the above mentioned engine procedures and
should be free of water.
In case the compressor forms part of the Stork--Wärtsilä Diesel supply, consult the
Sub--suppliers manuals for details.
The starting air is supplied via a starting air valve (1.3), to be operated manually or/and
electrically, as starting air to the starting air valves (1.5), and as pilot air to the air
distributor (1.6).
The engine can be stopped either by remote control,
electric/pneumatic stopping device activated by the security system or manually by
pushing down a stopping lever until the engine stops.
In case of an engine failure, a stopping signal is given from the security and alarm
system. This stopping signal causes the magnetic three--way valve (2.2) to open and
the pilot air flows via the filter--water separator and the reducing valve to the stopping
cylinder (2.3).
The stopping cylinder pushes the regulating shaft (2.4) and the racks of the fuel pumps
to zero, which causes the engine to stop.
