LUBRICATING OIL REQUIREMENTS

LUBRICATING OIL REQUIREMENTS
NonnThe lubricating oil must have a number of physical and chemical properties,
generally required for satisfactory operation in medium speed diesel engines.
Since Stork--Wärtsilä Diesel neither manufactures nor supplies oil, Stork Wärtsilä
Diesel does not control or know the complete composition of a lubricating oil brand,
type or batch and therefore cannot give any guarantee that a lubricating oil brand, type
or batch will behave satisfactorily under all operating conditions.
It is the duty of the engine user to monitor the behaviour of the lubricating oil carefully
and regularly in order to ensure that engine remains in good condition.
Lubricating oil for lubrication of bearings, pistons, valve gear and gearwheels.
The lubricating oil must meet the following requirements:
--
The API class CD or US--Army--Mil--L--2104C, specifications.
--
The lubricating oil must be suitable for continuous cleaning by a centrifugal
separator (in by--pass). The lubricating oil inlet temperature for the separator is
to be controlled between 80
--
For the purpose of cleaning the lubricating oil by means of the centrifugal
separator the lubricating oil must have a high demulsifying ability. This is
particularly important whenever there is a possibility of contamination by sea
water.

The quantity of lubricating oil in the lubricating oil system:
With MDO--use it is 0.7 litres per kW output, as shown on the engine type plate.
If in accordance to specifications lower values have to be used, this will reduce
the effective life of the oil.
* In case the ambient temperature is extremely low, the point of solidification must
0
be at least 9
C below the lowest temperature at which the oil is expected to
be used.
** TBN = Total base number.(mg KOH/g lubricating oil) = 5 + 6
times sulphur percentage of the fuel. When a distillate fuel is continuously used
with a sulphur content well below 1%, a lubricating oil with a TBN 5--10 can be
applied.
The lubricating oil required for various engine parts, such as turbocharger and
governor is specified in the respective sub--suppliers manuals.
