BACKGROUND INFORMATION
2B 2B INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE
Read the following rules carefully before performing any inspection and/or
maintenance work on the engine.
1. 1. Use the Manual during maintenance work together with the Parts
Catalogue.
1. 2. During all maintenance work, observe the utmost cleanliness and order.
1. 3. Be aware of the risk of crankcase or camshaft case explosion!
Before performing any maintenance or inspection jobs on the engine,
always allow it to cool down sufficiently. A 10 minute cooling period will do
after a normal stop.
1. 4. Observe the fire precautions when maintenance jobs or cleaning of the
engine has to be done.
1. 5. Always shut off the starting air supply to the engine before starting
maintenance work.
1. 6. Always renew lock washers, copper rings, split pins, locking wires, self
locking nuts with nylon and "O"-- rings when assembling. In case copper
rings have to be used for a second time, please take care for proper
annealing.
1. 7. In general never leave "O" rings mounted on spare parts. Store "O"--rings in a
dry, cool and dark place.
2. 1. Before dismantling, check that all pipe systems concerned are drained or
pressure released. After dismantling, cover immediately the holes for
lubricating oil, fuel oil and air with tape, plugs, clean cloth or similar.
2. 2. Provide engine parts of marks for remounting in the same position. Marks on
engine parts should be copied on parts new to be installed at the same
location. Every exchange should be recorded in the engine logbook
mentioning the reason.
2. 3. If heavy parts have to be removed, e.g. a piston with connecting rod, the
crankshaft may start turning due to a sudden unbalance. For safety reasons
always engage the turning gear first and keep it engaged throughout the
jobs.
2. 4. In many instances it is advisable to record clearances before disassembling.
