Before starting work, please consult:
-- chapter 2, "BACKGROUND INFORMATION" ;
-- chapter 3, "TECHNICAL DATA".
1. 1. When only the valve springs need to be inspected or renewed, removal of the
cylinder head is not necessary.
1. 2. Bar the engine over so that the piston involved reaches T.D.C. of the firing
stroke, with the valves closed.
1. 3. Remove rocker arm assembly.
1. 4. Withdraw the bridge piece. Remove the valve stem spring clip (this is only
necessary for inlet valves because here the spring cup cannot be slipped over
the clip).
1. 5. Push down the valve springs:
-- Place the pressure pad (2) on the free guide pin so that the hole in the pad
is in line with the bore of the spring cup.
-- Remove the nozzle holder clamp, if it is still in position.
-- Place the holding fixture (1) with bolt (3) on the stud thus released, and using
the stud nut tighten these down to the cylinder head face.
Note:
If inlet valves are being removed, first slide the spring clip around the valve
stem downwards, because the valve, the spring, the cup and or the clip could
be damaged.
-- Using the pressure bolt force the valve springs down so that the valve
keepers are released and can be taken out.
Note :
The valve keepers, spring cup and valve should be kept together for each
valve to preserve the proper match.
-- Remove the tools and withdraw the valve springs for inspection and/or
renewal.
Examine the springs for :
--
Hairline cracks ;
--
Squareness ;
--
Length.
