CRANKWEB DEFLECTION
Crank 1 is on the non--flywheel side.
The crankweb deflection can be measured per crank, by placing a dial gauge between
the crank webs. The correct measuring location is indicated on both sides by a centre
point in the crank webs. Set the dial gauge to zero with the crank at its lowest position.
The gauge can be read off per crank in three positions of the crankshaft, as follows
:
--
crank at exhaust side ;
--
crank in top (with mounted con rod, this position must be approximated as
closely as possible) ;
--
crank at camshaft side.
Check whether the values found are within the specified tolerances, using the
measuring results stated in the test record and / or obtained during start--up as
reference. If the values found are outside the specified tolerance, please notify the
Service Department of SWD.
Attention:
Naturally it will be necessary to bar the engine over during crankweb deflection
measurement. However, avoid barring more than strictly necessary because it is
rarely possible to apply prelubrication. The only source of lubrication available under
these circumstances is the oil film that has remained in the bearings.
Measuring axial play of the crank shaft:
2. 1. Place a magnetic micrometer dial against the crankweb or flywheel.
2. 2. Move the crankshaft to one side.
2. 3. Set the dial to zero.
2. 4. Move the crankshaft to the other side and read off the micrometer. The
maximum permissible axial clearance is 0.50 mm. Comparing the actual
value obtained with the clearance measured during start--up (see the
start--up record) will provide a reliable indication of the wear that has
occurred.
