REPLACEMENT

Before starting work, please consult:
-- chapter 2 -- BACKGROUND INFORMATION ;
-- chapter 3 -- TECHNICAL DATA.
1. Carefully clean and dry the bearing saddle, the bearing cap, the bearing shells and
crankshaft with a lint free cotton cloth.
2. Replacement of the lower bearing shell:
2. 1. Fit the driver into the oil channel of the crankshaft. If necessary, turn the
engine first.
2. 2. Turn back the engine until the bearing shell can be fitted.
Lubricate the running layer of the bearing shell sparingly with engine oil. The
back surface must remain dry!
Always refit used bearing shells in exactly the same position and in the same
place.
Place the end of the bearing shell in the slot between the journal and the
bearing saddle. Mind the positioning lug.
Centre it with the jig, Tool C, and push it in by hand as far as possible, (about
1/3 of its length).
2. 3. Slowly turn the driver against the bearing shell joint. Turn the bearing shell
slowly into position until the bearing shell joints are about level with the
joining faces of the cylinder block. The joints must be thoroughly cleaned.
Whilst turning the bearing, keep one hand on the exposed surface, and
make sure the bearing shell stays in contact with the crank shaft journal.
2. 4. Turn back and remove the driver.
3. Make sure that the positioning the lug of the lower bearing shell, engages with the
recess in the bearing saddle.
4. Replacement of the upper bearing shell and the bearing cap:
4. 1. Carefully clean the bearing cap bore and the abutting faces of the bearing
cap.
4. 2. Place the upper bearing shell in position (the one with the oil groove). Mind
the positioning lug.
4. 3. Lubricate the running layer of the bearing shell sparingly with engine oil. The
back surface must remain dry.
4. 4. Fit the bearing cap together with the upper half shell into position.
4. 5. Make sure the bearing shells are in line.
5. Tightening the bearing cap:
5. 1. Prior to tightening the main bearing cap nuts, lubricate the threads on the
studs and the nuts sparingly with engine oil.
5. 2. Use new locking plates and tighten the bearing cap nuts diagonally in two
steps to the torque specified in chapter three Technical Data.
5. 3. Secure the bearing cap nuts by means of the locking plates.
