GENERAL
This chapter describes the inspection and maintenance procedures.
Section 4B gives a description when and which inspection and maintenance actions
have to be carried out. In case you need any further explanation, contact the service
department of Stork--Wärtsilä Diesel.
With the aid of the test report and earlier observations list it is possible to detect and
resolve faults by calculated actions.
10. 1.Observation lists:
For the purpose of keeping a close check on the engine in operation it is advised
to keep a log book of temperatures and pressures, speeds and engine adjust-
ments. This provides a good overview of the normal values, so that deviations
can be detected early.
10. 2.Fluid levels:
These checks should include the following items:
-- oil level, engine ;
-- oil level, turbocharger(s)
(not applicable to VTC turbochargers) ;
-- level of fresh cooling water system(s) ;
-- oil level governor ;
-- level of daily service fuel tank.
10. 3.Leaks:
During operation, check engine externally for leakage:
-- fuel system ;
-- lubricating oil system ;
-- cooling water system ;
-- air intake system and exhaust gas system ;
-- start and stop system ;
10. 4.Draining:
The daily service tank must be regularly drained at its lowest point, in order to
ensure that no contamination or water residues can get into the engine's fuel sys-
tem.
The air bottles and filter of the water separator should be regularly drained at their
lowest points to prevent impurities and condensate from getting into the engine's
starting air and stop system.
10. 5.Thermometers, pressure gauges:
Check daily thermometers and pressure gauges for proper performance
Defective thermometers can be renewed when engine is stopped. During opera-
tion only the upper part can be replaced. Then remove the rest from the lower
part.
Badly vibrating pressure gauge pointers may lead to gauge failure and make it
difficult to take readings. To stop pointers from vibrating it is recommended to
shut the pressure gauge cocks to the point of minimal vibration.
Another method that will help to spare the pressure gauges is to keep the gauge
cocks fully shut, and to open them a little each time a pressure reading is wanted.
