INTERNAL INSPECTION
Before starting work, please consult:
-- chapter 2, "BACKGROUND INFORMATION".
For safety reasons, before removing all crankcase covers:
--
close starting air supply to the engine ;
--
open decompression cocks;
Attention must be paid to the following :
--
the axial movement of the big end of the connecting rod on the crank pin journal
--
carbon build-up under or near the cylinder liners ;
--
local discolouration of the paint ;
--
fouling and the presence of impurities ;
--
the presence of metal particles ;
--
water leakage, notably around the cylinder liners ;
--
running face of the gear wheels ;
--
when a piston is at its T.D.C., part of the associated cylinder liner can be
examined ;
--
the locking arrangement of the con rod nuts ;
--
the welds locking the counter weight bolts in place ;
--
when a piston is at its B.D.C., part of the associated piston can be examined ;
--
start pre--lubricating pump and check for internal leakage.
For inspection of the cooling water spaces around the cylinder liners it is necessary
to remove one or more cylinder liners.
For removal of cylinder liners, please consult chapter 15C.
By removing the covers of the cooling water supply channel this space can be
inspected.
The cooling water spaces have to be visually inspected on the following:
-- Serious corrosion ;
-- Cavitation ;
-- Sludge formation ;
-- Line deposits and any other abnormalities.
