3.2.1 SDH transmission architecture
The overall functional architecture for SDH traffic is depicted in Figure 27. on page 60.
The description of SDH architecture is based on SDH terminologies, taking ITU-T standards (mainly
G.783) as a reference for the functional model description.
When dealing with SDH traffic, the functions of MSPC and HVC, foreseen by the standard functional
model, collapse in one single entity implemented in the central switching element.
SDH LO traffic switching is managed in a different separated device (not available in current release)
SDH functional architecture can be further divided into different subsystems dedicated respectively to the
management of:

SDH HO traffic (i.e. VC-4 for SDH) (refer to paragraph 3.2.1.1 on page 61);
–
SDH/Sonet LO traffic (i.e. VC-3, VC-12 for SDH) (refer to paragraph 3.2.1.2 on page 61);
–
PDH access and mapping (refer to paragraph 3.2.1.3 on page 62);
