3.2 Signal architecture

The signal management architecture has been designed in order to obtain a flexible system, able to
handle at same time TDM traffic (SDH) as well as data traffic.
This flexibility is obtained by means of a payload independent switching element.
Payload dependent functions are implemented dedicated cards (e.g. I/O port cards for HO SDH
processing).
The traffic management in 1850 TSS-320 is performed according to the functional architecture foreseen
by the dedicated current reference standards.
In particular, the functional architecture is referred to:
G.783 for SDH traffic;
G.8021/IEEE 802.3 for ethernet traffic;
IEEE 802.17 for RPR traffic;
IETF RFC 3031, RFC 3032 for MPLS traffic.
ITU-T G.709 interface for the Optical Transport Network (OTN)
ITU-T G.798 Characteristics of the Optical Transport Network (OTN) hierarchy equipment functional
blocks
ITU-T G.692 Optical interfaces for multichannel system with optical amplifier
ITU-T G.872 Architecture of the Optical
Transport Network (OTN)
ITU-T G.693 Optical interfaces for Intra-office system
ITU-T G.959.1 Optical Transport Network (OTN) physical layer interfaces.
The overall functional architecture for traffic management of 1850 TSS-320 node is depicted in Figure 26.
on page 59.
The system is based upon a payload switching element which combines both TDM and packet switching
capabilities.
In the same matrix element, therefore, can be performed, at the same time, SDH MSP, SDH HO, MPLS.
The SDH LO traffic are cross-connected in a dedicated LO matrix device (not operative in current release)
Beside matrices, the boards that can be housed in the equipment implement the payload specific
processing functions (e.g. SDH port cards, as well as data card).
In the following sections the system will be described on traffic base:
SDH transmission architecture (refer to paragraph 3.2.1 on page 60);
Data transmission architecture (refer to paragraph 3.2.2 on page 64).
CWDM transmission architecture (refer to paragraph 3.2.3 on page 67)
