3.2.3.1 Line Terminal
In Line Terminal configuration, the CWDM system of the Alcatel 1850 TSS-320 equipment connects up
to 8 colored optical signals (STM-16/OC-48, 1GbE) to an optical fibre CWDM line.
In Line Terminal configuration, the equipment takes places at both ends of point-to-point links.
It is made up of (in case of 8-channel CWDM line)
– a max of 8 colored boards (SDH/SONET, DATA) providing 8 optical channels
– a CMDX8 (mux/demux).
CMDX1 and CMDX2 boards are available in case of 1-channel and 2-channel CWDM lines are required.

3.2.3.2 Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer (OADM)
The Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer is able to add and drop a part of the traffic (wavelengths) to/from
the CWDM aggregate signal, in both directions (East/West)
It is based on a mux/demux pair (located in the same CADMx board) in back-to-back configuration.
1/2/4 channels/wavelengths can be added and dropped by means of the CADM1/2/4 boards.
All the channels that are not extracted are in pass-through, without any regeneration (express channels).
If n is the number of CWDM channels (line signal) and x the added/dropped channels, n - x is the number
of the channels in pass-through (express channels).
The OADM takes place as linear add and drop multiplexer in point-to-point links and ring networks.
This configuration allows the Sub-Network Connection Protection of the added and dropped channels.
The OADM is made up of:
– Colored boards (SDH/SONET, DATA)
– one CADMx board, equipped with two mux/demux (one per direction).
