Figure 43. on page 83 shows the use of the system in order to achieve AU3/TU3 conversion. As depicted,
the HO UNIVERSAL MATRIX has to aggregate the traffic coming from both SDH and Sonet side towards
the LOA card, providing VC-4 and VC-3 cross-connection capabilities at the same time.
LOA card then has to provide two different functionalities: the former devoted to the processing of the VC-
3 LO tributaries carried over structured VC-4s, the latter devoted to the conversion of AU-3 containers into
TU-3: in this way Sonet HO VC-3s are converted into SDH LO VC-3.

3.4.3 LO Matrix

The LO matrix is implemented in the matrix board of the equipment, by means of a dedicated device,
providing switching capabilities with VC-3/VC-12/VC-11 granularity, thus providing full applicability to both
SDH and Sonet. The switching capability is fully non blocking with respect to any broadcast type.
The matrix receives LO tributaries from the LOA board together with the information, carried via in band
signalling, representing the status of each LO tributary. Such information are processed in the LO matrix
device in order to calculate the state of the LPC connection function and perform then the switching
command. The corresponding functional model of the matrix board is depicted in Figure 45 on page 64.
• Sm_CF (LPC): LO connection function status is generated in order to provide VC-m (m= 3, 12,
11) connectivity among input and output ports. The assignment of incoming VC-m to outgoing
VC-m is defined as the 'connection pattern' which can be described by a uni-directional
connection matrix and characterized by:
– Type of connection (unprotected, 1+1 protected by means of SNCP/I, SNCP/N, SNCP/
S protection).
Note:SNCP/N, SNCP/S protection are not operative in current release.
– Traffic direction (unidirectional, bi-directional).
– Input and output connection points.
