4 UNIT DESCRIPTIONS

In the following paragraphs are inserted the detailed information of unit and subunit of the equipment.

4.1 EQUIPMENT CONTROLLER card "EC320"

The board provides the HW resources in order to support the "Equipment Controller" (EC), "Operation and
Maintenance" (OAM) and "Control and General Interface" (CGI) functions.
The EC function is in charge of the processing activities concerning the "Virtual Equipment Control
Element" (VECE) function, consisting of:
• Virtual Machine Management Function (VMMF)
• Message Communication Function (MCF)
The OAM function is in charge of providing the hardware support for the GMPLS Routing Engine (GMRE).
This is a software engine capable of automatically setting up and tearing down cross-connections
according to signaling and routing standards defined by OIF, IETF and ITU organizations.
The CGI function, tailored mostly to EC activity, manages several physical interfaces related to station
alarms collection and signaling, which are available on the unit front panel.
The "EC320" unit is composed by a "main board" and a "daughter board".
The "main board", provides the circuits for:
– Physical layer interface for the different system–related serial communication channels supported
by the EC function.
– Station alarm signaling interfaces (Rack lamps, Remote Alarms and Housekeeping)
– Mass storage device for NE data base (Hard Disk Drive)
– Board and System Identification function (support to EC daughter board).
– Unit's power supply.
– Multi HDLC controller for ECC termination (DCC_M, DCC_R and DCC_P).
– Remote Inventory function.
The "daughter board"
hardware components required by the EC processing function:
– Microprocessor (CPU).
– System memory (Boot Flash EPROM, RAM).
